I don't have to tell you how much stress takes a toll on our lives and health - I'm pretty sure you know. You probably experience it's effects everyday - anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, irritability, etc.
Oh look.. I told you the effects without realizing it. Actually, I did mean to list its effects because you need to take it seriously. Stress is unhealthy, and so are it's effects.
I can't sit here and say that I'm doing the best job at managing my stress, however, I've incorporated a few things into my life over time that I feel have helped tremendously. I'd like to share them with you - in hopes that some or all may help you as well.
1. Massage
Oh boy. I hadn't realized how foreign body massages were to me until my partner started giving them to me. Can you believe that I have never experienced a proper back and neck massage? How about I've never had my legs and hands massaged? Not to mention my feet! OHH BOYYYY! I'm in a state of relief right now just thinking about it.
Did you know that body massages are a great stress reliever? It releases serotonin and dopamine which are your body's natural defense against stress and it's effects. Massages are great for pain relief as well. My mother used to have chronic back pain during her battle with cancer and sometimes the medicine just wasn't enough. Once we realized that massaging her back relieved some of her pain, it was on. Constant back rubs on the daily!
So, try it out. I'd recommend adding a massage therapist to your monthly bills. Go once or twice a month. Your body and brain will thank you.
2. Silence
Taking a moment to sit alone, in silence, brings me so much peace. You can say it's a form of meditation, obviously. Sitting in silence brings me to a state of calm where I can just sit there and appreciate the stillness. I'm away from the noise of everyday life. No engagement with the outside world. I'm able to let my mind rest, breathe, and listen.
In all honesty, it makes me feel a divine connection. It feels like God, my mother, grandmother, ancestors, spirit, guardian angels, and any other powerful source are all in the room with me.
Try it.
3. Exercise 🏋🏽♀️
I actually never have the motivation to exercise. Haha. 🤣
However, whenever I do, my mind and body feels amazing! I'm sure you already know the benefits of exercising so I won't go down that road. However, start adding some form of cardio into your life. Your body needs it, so do it!
I'm talking to myself here too. 😫
4. Cleaning
I get overwhelmed by clutter and that causes anxiety for me. Moreover, I'll find myself not being able to focus. I also get uncomfortable with my surroundings when my space is messy. Basically, it's just a big trickle down effect.
You ever notice how great you feel after cleaning your home or car? You know that feeling! If you don't - look around. You may need to clean up. It can make you feel like a brand new person.
